Yamaan Foundation is the foremost social marketing enterprise in Yemen. Through employing traditional marketing techniques, implementing behaviour change communication (BCC) activities and partnering with the private and public sector Yamaan prevents unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of HIV and other STIs through the distribution and sales of Protec contraceptives.
With support from USAID through the Community Livelihood Project (CLP) and in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MoPHP), Yamaan Foundation trained 120 midwives from six governorates on family planning. The course was competency-based and encompassed the subjects of FP counseling, infection prevention and IUD insertion and removal. The targeted governorates are Hudiedah, Dhamar, Lahj, Sana'a, Taiz and Ibb. Midwifery Kits with IUD insertion/removal instruments were distributed to all the trained midwives.
As Yemen has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the region, the MoPHP pays attention to build the capacity of midwives to promote family planning and reproductive health services mainly in rural areas. The trained midwives will contribute to the provision of high quality family planning services and contribute to the reduction of maternal mortality as a key objective of the millennium development goals (MDGs).
